Head of Design

Job description

Do you want to work with us as the Head of Design?

Design isn’t just about aesthetics. It’s the art of making things usable. As the Head of Design, you raise the bar for design quality and hold the organisation to an ever-improving definition of good. You are responsible for leading our team of designers, ensuring alignment across multidisciplinary product teams and empowering others to utilise and grow funda’s shared visual language. Design at funda is about thoughtfulness, simplicity, quality and providing value to our users, both consumers and real estate agents.

As you probably know, funda is the leading real estate platform in the Netherlands. We are a well-loved and trusted brand and take pride in being part of one of the most important moments in people’s lives. With over 4 million returning visitors per month, we will continue to strengthen our position and use it to add more value throughout the whole journey of searching, buying, moving, owning and selling a house; so that we can take the stress out of all those moments in buyers’ and sellers’ journeys.

Your job

You and the team are responsible for bringing together the needs of consumers and real estate agents alike, to provide them with valuable experiences which help solve their problems. The role is an exciting challenge to work on a platform that impacts almost every buyer, renter, seller and homeowner in the Netherlands.

Your challenges

  • You mentor a team of talented designers; setting a high bar for the work the team produces, ensuring the business understands the strategic advantage that the role of design plays.
  • You work with Jephta (Research Lead), Angelika (Consumer Product Lead) and Jasper (Agent Product Lead), Engineering Leads and a variety of stakeholders in Marketing, Sales, Service and management to devise and define a product strategy that focuses on providing measurable value.
  • You help to ensure the company does the right research by utilising your deep understanding of user intent and behaviour based on their real-world actions. You help to refine our product direction based on this input and help to share insights across the company.
  • You further establish and build upon the user experience by aligning the needs and expectations of a two-sided marketplace. The work you do provides valuable solutions that better the entire journey – not only a feature.
  • You play a supportive role in solving everything from complex systems design challenges to detailed interaction problems.
  • You raise the bar for design quality and hold the organisation to an ever-improving definition of good. Looking after the design principles and design system you drive the ongoing development and maintenance of them to improve how we work with cross functional teams and across platforms; you are goal-driven when it comes to efficiency and collaboration.
  • You are actively involved in the further development of the visual elements of funda's brand guide. And you guide your team to ensure they accurately and effectively incorporate our brand identity and guidelines their work.
  • You ensure the operational stability and health of your team, engaging them with funda’s career framework; organising trainings and balancing creative and user-centric processes that improve the people and the work.

Your team
You lead and manage a team of UX Designers (Rick, Esti and Erik) and your extended team of Leads includes Jephta (Research Lead), Angelika (Consumer Product Lead) and Jasper (Agent Product Lead). Each multidisplicinary team has a Product Owner (Ugo, Hans, Charley, Jorian) and a dedicated researcher (Bloeme and Annika). You will report directly and work closely with Peter (Chief Product Officer).

Requirements

Your profile

We’re looking for someone who’s both player and coach, who’s a team member and a Lead and who knows when to act fast and when to slow down. But above all: you pay close attention to our users' needs and have a talent for decoding their feedback into the underlying design challenges. You exceed their expectations, and you take great pride in your ability to thrive in solving complex problems with solutions that deliver true value.

And apart from having an awesome personality, here are some requirements we are looking for:

  • Experience managing design talent at a technology company, marketplace or e-commerce platform that has a large user base.
  • You have a high attention for detail and are rigorous about a consistent design language.
  • Stellar design and information architecture abilities.
