Data Engineer

Funda’s Data Engineer is the king or queen of translation. You are able to speak all of our data languages and funnel them into a single clear stream that is workable for everyone. This is an important role within the organisation as you also transform raw data into information that is valuable for data-driven decision-making. Funda has a huge vision for the future and data is the key to help us achieve it.

At design level, you are able to assess the needs of both producers and consumers and maintain the architecture that best fits their needs. We are looking for someone with a high level of independence, who is ambitious and wants to have an impact on a big company. Your job

You develop, maintain and test data pipelines that capture, integrate and centralise the various data flowing from all our systems and processes. You’re responsible for making sure that data is accessible and ready for analysis by both Data Scientists and Data Analysts. You partner with our Data Scientists and Data Analysts and empower teams to collect, measure and present metrics while thinking about the project they will work on next. We need someone to help the teams do that by making sure the right data is available, easily accessible and reliable.

The challenge

The big amount of traffic on funda translates to big data. At funda we collect about one billion user interactions each month. You will be responsible for integrating these interactions together with data from various other sources of different natures, and creating a single source of truth in BigQuery. You will enrich the data, operationalize it via core tables, as well as aggregate it into new models for straightforward consumption and dashboarding. You will work on projects ranging from working together with our Data Scientists on the creation of datasets for machine learning, to serving data directly back into funda's products.

Your team

The current multi-disciplinary data team consists of one Analytics Engineer (Esther), a Data Scientist (Edwin), two Data Analysts (Ruben and Eveline) and one Data Lead (Linda). You will also work in close alignment with the service owner of the team (Stephen) and Eduardo, the CTO. The biggest challenge here is finding the right balance to work with a multidisciplinary team to manage people with different ways of working and backgrounds. Your profile

You are an experienced Data Engineer who makes pragmatic and practical choices that allow us to move fast and give us the guarantees we need. You also recognize yourself in the following:

• You have a bachelor's or other university degree in computer science or a similar quantitative field;
• 4+ years of relevant work experience;
• You have experience with workflow orchestrator tools (e.g. Airflow), data modelling and the best practices of data warehousing;
• You are highly skilled in processing data using SQL as well as a major programming or scripting language (preferably Python);
• You have experience with collecting event streams and transforming / modelling them into core and aggregated tables for convenient consumption. Nice to have: experience working with event streams and customer data platforms (preferably Segment);
• You have experience with cloud data warehouses and services (preferably Google BigQuery, Azure Cloud, Kubernetes);
• Nice to have: Experience with highly available, distributed systems for processing large datasets (e.g. big data processing frameworks like Spark);
• You have a good command of the English language, both written and spoken.
